Healthy Singer Challenge: Sleep

This week in the Healthy Singer Challenge, we’re focusing on the essential role of sleep in supporting vocal health, creativity, and performance. Sleep isn't just a time for rest—it's when your body and mind recover, consolidate memory, and prepare for peak performance. By prioritizing restorative sleep, singers can enhance their focus, stamina, and vocal clarity.
The Science of Sleep for Singers
According to the article "Sleep and the Singer" by Pamela Harvey and Keith Saxon, published in the Journal of Singing, insufficient sleep affects vocal performance in several ways:
- Sleep deprivation can impair breath control, articulation, and vocal stamina
- In a survey of 56 singers, the majority reported experiencing vocal fatigue, difficulty with breath support, and reduced vocal endurance after insufficient sleep
- Sleep cycles, particularly stages of deep sleep and REM sleep, are critical for restoring the voice and consolidating newly learned vocal techniques
Additionally, prolonged sleep deprivation can disrupt the body's immune system and increase the risk of illness, further affecting vocal performance.
This Week's Challenge: Prioritize Restorative Sleep
- Aim for 7-9 Hours of Sleep per Night: Research shows that singers who sleep 7–9 hours consistently experience better focus, vocal endurance, and fewer vocal issues
- Create a Sleep-Friendly Routine:
- Maintain a consistent bedtime and wake time, even on weekends.
- Avoid energizing activities, screens, and caffeine before bed.
- Create a relaxing pre-sleep routine, such as reading or practicing mindfulness.
- Enhance Your Sleep Environment: Keep your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool to support deep, restorative sleep.
- Track Your Sleep: Use a journal or app to record how much and how well you sleep each night. Reflect on how it impacts your vocal performance during practice and performances.
