What's the go-to piece that you love to sing?

It might be that aria that you learned 10 years ago and still knock out of the park every time...or that Schubert art song that you can't seem to get out of your head or even that sweet hymn tune that inspires everyone when they hear it! In any case, we all have them. They fit our voices like a glove and we can always count on them to deliver. This week, tell us what piece has become your 'go-to.'

I have only started singing recently and so do not have an at all large repertoire, but I particularly enjoy Gilbert and Sullivan's "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General."

That's a fantastic piece! So much fun - a ton of articulation and great character :) Do you prefer musical theatre rep?

Well, I do enjoy Gilbert and Sullivan, that's to be sure, but I think I'm really more of a Schubert Lied type of person; Major General started as just trying to see if I could learn the words, and then I discovered that I really enjoyed it. (I also have only really a few songs which I've learned, as up to the start of this year my musical endeavors were spent entirely on the Piano)

Ah! Schubert.. given the fact that he was a pianist and singer, it sounds like he is the perfect match for you :) I look forward to hearing you tackle some of his pieces!

I've mainly sang in choir at church but not at all in the last 12 years I think. I don't have a go to song unfortunately and hope to develop some passion as I work with all of you at Tonebase.  I do sing along with the radio to some 60s and 70s music, dating myself I guess.

Nothing wrong with 60s and 70s music! Looking forward to seeing what you discover here on tonebase. I have no doubt that your church choir will greatly benefit from your deep dive into singing!

It’s a song I made up years ago: Dear God, thank you for this day, repeated with variations

That's a tough question for me. I would guess Giordani's Caro mio ben I learned many years ago, but it seems to get harder as time goes on. Martini's Plaisir d'amour is fun to sing with friends at music parties, but I Dvorak "Song to the Moon" is also great whenever I can get the accompaniment to go with.

Such wonderful and varied repertoire! We have an artist coming on to teach the Rusalka, so you will be able to use the accompaniment from that lesson anytime you want!
