Healthy Singer Challenge: Healthy Eating Habits

This week in the Healthy Singer Challenge, we focus on how diet and nutrition can significantly impact your vocal health and performance. Nutrition isn't just about fueling your body; it's about creating an environment for your voice to thrive. Drawing from multiple studies and expert insights, we’ll explore how tracking your food choices can help identify habits that support or hinder vocal clarity and stamina.

The Science Behind Nutrition for Vocal Health

The study by Edman, Kondrad, and Rakel in the Journal of Singing (2011) emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet and integrative nutrition practices for singers. Diets rich in anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens, berries, nuts, and omega-3 fatty acids, help reduce inflammation and promote overall vocal health. Additionally, eliminating irritants like processed sugars and fried foods can alleviate common issues like acid reflux, which negatively impact the voice.

The second part of their research highlights the role of specific supplements, such as magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics, in enhancing vocal endurance and reducing strain.

This Week’s Challenge: Food Journaling

  1. Track Your Meals: Keep a food journal this week to record everything you eat and drink. Pay attention to how different foods impact your vocal performance and energy levels.
  2. Incorporate Vocal-Friendly Foods: Focus on eating anti-inflammatory foods like spinach, kale, salmon, blueberries, flaxseeds, and walnuts.
  3. Avoid Common Irritants: Limit or eliminate foods that can irritate the GI tract, such as fried foods. GI distress can have negative impacts on the health of the vocal folds and tissues around them.
  4. Timing: Avoid late-night meals to reduce the risk of acid reflux.
  5. BONUS!!! Consider the Benefits of Supplements: Consult with a nutritionist or healthcare professional about incorporating supplements like magnesium or omega-3 fatty acids to support vocal endurance.

I try to eat clean as possible.

I noticed that foods with oils and some cheeses give me a burny acidic feeling. It is not something like tomato that does it which may surprise some people.

I drink almond milk as well since milk is hard to digest and at times makes too much mucus.
