What's your first vivid memory of singing?

Did you know that there is a significant amount of evidence that points to humans developing our singing skills even before we developed language? That comes as no surprise to most singers. We often start singing before we can even really form discernible words. Anyone who has spent any time around babies and toddlers understands how common it is to hear those first little sounds of modulations coming from an infant. You even see some kids incorporate little hand movements or some early dance moves. Though most of us have these early hints at the music making that is to come, it's a rare singer who actually remembers these moments. In this Discussion of the Week, we are talking about our earliest memories of singing. How far back does your memory go? What is you first vivid memory of singing? Where were you? Who was there? What did you sing?

Sang O Holy Night with Bob P and John H at church as a Trio, we were in 4th grade. It went very well according to the organist and choir director but my older two sisters told me I had too much vibrato and shouldn't sing ever again.

What a great story!! You had me at 'vibrato' 馃槀
You may need to get the band back together and see how that "O Holy Night" is working for you now 馃槃

My first memories are singing in school assemblies, school concerts and in the car on long journeys.  Assemblies would be hymns (probably from Hymns Ancient and Modern), concerts would be early C20th songs or a musical like Oliver.  In the car, we'd sing camp fire songs, folk songs and rounds.  Encouraging adults were ALL important.

That is a theme I hear over and over again. Encouraging adults can make all the difference for a developing singer! Any favorite hymns or songs that you still enjoy?
