Discovery Challenge: French Mélodie

A Two-Week tonebase Voice Challenge (March 9–23)

Sign-Up Opens March 1

Step into the world of French mélodie — where clarity, language, and musical proportion converge. In this two-week tonebase Voice challenge, we explore how singers transform poetic understanding into expressive sound, uniting scholarship, diction, and interpretation.

In Week 1, we build a shared listening landscape spanning Fauré, Duparc, Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc. Through guided daily prompts, you’ll explore how text setting, harmonic color, speech rhythm, and stylistic restraint define the French tradition. Participants are encouraged to discover recordings, compare interpreters, and deepen their listening awareness.

In Week 2, you’ll connect that listening to your own singing. Choose one mélodie to explore — a full song or excerpt — and apply focused prompts on structure, diction, harmonic pacing, resonance strategy, and phrase architecture. This is an invitation to move from observation to embodiment, allowing clarity of understanding to shape clarity of sound.

Throughout the challenge, you’ll have access to:

  • Blair Boone-Migura’s French Mélodie livestream (Feb 25)

  • Derrick Goff’s French Diction course

  • Curated repertoire and artist recommendations

  • A supportive community of singers and collaborative musicians

There are no required uploads — only opportunities to explore, reflect, and share discoveries.

This challenge is designed for singers who want to sing with understanding — where interpretation grows from structure and artistry grows from clarity.

Who it’s for:
Singers, teachers, and pianists seeking a deeper, text-centered and stylistically informed approach to French song.

Duration: March 9–23

I think this might be the first challenge I won't be participating in since I joined TB Voice last year! We are away from home for March (a piano mentorship for Thurmond), and my father just passed away, too, so I won't have the time or emotional energy for this challenge. I'll miss working through it with everyone, but hopefully will have the energy to join whatever happens to be next. Take care, and I hope it is an enjoyable 2 weeks!

dang..well we will certainly miss you and my sincerest condolence on the loss of your father. I will keep you and Thurmond in my prayers.
Best of luck to him in the piano program!
