Group 1

Welcome to this Two Week Intensive on Coloratura and Flexibility. In the next two weeks, we will be working to expand our agility with a specific emphasis on singing florid passages and vocal runs. We'll talk about how style impacts our approach to coloratura and we'll learn how coloratura practice can help with range expansion.  As with every two week intensive, I want to encourage you to POST and REPLY!! I'm here to respond to your questions and give you actionable, educated feedback. Your colleagues can also help motivate you and we can all learn from each other! Don't be shy! Please reach out. I LOVE answering singers' questions and encouraging you with actionable feedback :)

    Hello there!

Day 1: Cecilia Bartoli, Vivaldi, Agitata tra due venti https://youtu.be/6czLBVqo_zw?si=w2ej3pKknTfaLSoL

Interesting to watch this with the volume off. In some spots, you would never know she was singing coloratura. Interesting jaw movements at the onset for pattern work. What do you notice?

    Joan Sutherland example :

She accentuates some important notes by singing them louder, notably high notes, the rest is softer.

She is standing very straight, torso very open, straight and long neck.

She opens more the mouth for acute notes, and she then smiles and strives lower lip.

    She has a furrowed brow.

She passes from chest to head register.

She takes time, at the and of the aria to breath between the passagi.

In the fastest passages, we don't always hear a clear beginning for each tone.

    Some passages are staccati.

    They are ralentandi.

    The phrasing is musical.

    Jarrouski example :

The voice is more equal regarding voice tone..

The neck is flexible, he sometimes tends to raise his chin, but the body is straight.

He also has a furrowed forehead.

He also gives more importance to some notes, but he does or with more sound (forte) or with less sound (piani). In the accurates he sometimes sings pianissimi spun sounds (but we can then hear a little breath on the voice).

The tempo is more stable, but there is a great freedom inside this tempo.

    He is living tempo bodily.

Each note has a very clear beginning. But in the little extract at the end of the video, when he sings faster, this isn't always the case anymore.

    Bartoli example :

She passes very quickly from chest to head register and her chest stays round and very resonant.

Even in the very fast passages, we can clearly hear the beginning of each tone.

She moves her head forward for the acutes, and back for the low notes.

The fastest passages are softer than the rest of the aria.

She sings accelerando after the middle part of the aria.

    She sometimes makes echo effects.

Light movement of the lips during the coloratures.

You found some excellent examples with very different voices in terms of color and weight. Do you notice any differences in terms of approach from singers who traditionally sing early music vs. those singing bel canto or more romantic repertoire? Anything noteworthy in terms of different voice types navigating coloratura? Any consistencies across all the examples?

Hello there! Today I found this: it's interesting to see the different technique in the same Vivaldi piece between Cecilia Bartoli and Vivica Genaux!
