Now we merge rhythm and text with expressive style. The playful and ambiguous meaning of this aria comes to life through tone color and phrasing.

Day 15 – Onsets, Legato, Release

  • Practice balanced onsets; avoid “popping” into light syllables.

  • Keep legato smooth, even through text repetitions.

  • Prompt: Which phrase required the most care to keep smooth?

Day 16 – Vowel Core & Resonance

  • Focus on clarity of [e] and [i] vowels—bright but not spread.

  • Practice a small messa di voce on a sustained tone.

  • Prompt: Which vowel resisted staying resonant?

Day 17 – Derrick Goff Livestream (Wed, Sept 24, 11:00 AM PT)

  • Attend livestream; post questions in this thread or livestream thread.

  • Apply one of Derrick’s suggestions directly in practice.

  • Prompt: Which insight from Derrick shifted your interpretation?

Day 18 – Phrasing & Rubato

  • Experiment with rubato to highlight irony or affection in the text.

  • Prompt: Where did rubato best serve the meaning?

Day 19 – Consonant Clarity & Diction

  • Keep Italian consonants crisp but playful; avoid heaviness that kills charm.

  • Prompt: Which cluster risked breaking your legato?
    📌 Cohort Check: Start a Consonant Relay with a tricky word; tag a peer to imitate.


Day 20 – Full Run-Through

  • Run the aria once on neutral syllable, once with text. Add stylistic flair: gentle dynamic shifts, teasing articulation.

  • Prompt: What one choice captured the playful character best?
    📌 Cohort Check: Post your clip; peers describe the mood in one word (tender / playful / ironic / coy).


Day 21 – Performance Video & Reflection

  • Record your full performance and post it by Sept 30 to be eligible for showcase.

  • Include 2–3 bullet points about your interpretive approach.

  • Prompt: What changed most for you since Week 1?
    📌 Cohort Check: Watch two peer videos; offer one strength + one growth suggestion.


🎭 Fun Along the Way (Cohort Edition)

  • Two Takes Challenge: Post one version “innocent,” one “playful.” Peers vote which feels truer to the text.

  • Feedback Chains: After posting, tag two peers to give feedback—and return the favor.

  • Cohort Vote: As a group, vote on who captured the playful irony of Se tu m’ami most vividly.

    Day 15: The phrase "Non per che mi....sprezzero" required the most care to keep smooth because I'm still thinking a lot about all those letters!! As my teacher said, "this phrase is gnarly!"

    The bulk of my practice right now will still consist of speaking the text and singing on a neutral syllable. 

    Here is the first phrase, in which I am now hyperaware, hypercritical, and unsatisfied with all of the t's and p's! :-)

       LOL.. hyper aware is not so bad, now hyper-critical is another story. I had a teacher say that "this is music for a lifetime." There is always something to discover and refine (and as you age, rediscover and adjust 😂).. Listening to your latest video and wondering if you've played around with this in a higher key OR if you've experimented with using a more chest dominant space on the bottom end? Either might be fun to explore 😉

       The hyper-critical aspect always decreases after a day or two. One of my mentors in coaching liked to say that we train our athletes for perfection, but that we accept and embrace reality. My teacher is being careful in the area of “ range extension,” focusing mostly on coordination and playfulness right now so he has suggested singing this is d minor, which is not a reach.

    Day 16: First, I had to look up what messa di voce meant 😊, and then I found that I had the most challenge with [e]. Otherwise, no practice today as I had clients and appointments all day and I am tired!

       that is one of the hardest skills in classical singing FYI.. there are a lot of tricky prompts in this one.

    Day 17: There were many great takeaways from the Livestream (which I'll need to go back and watch since it kept cutting out on me and just ended mid-sentence!), but the one that really hit home was to sing the piece(s) in a way that works for you right now.

    Days 18&19: busy week, so I haven't had as much time to pay attention to this piece. I have done a little experimentation with rubato, but don't have any specific places  where it seems to work best (yet!). And probably because I'm still not confident with text, I'm not sure of areas where the consonants risk becoming heavy. I expect answers to both the rubato and consonant queries will become more apparent as I continue to work on this piece after the end of the challenge.

    Day 20:  I think the one choice that captured the playful character best was the "Southern Wink." 😉

    I'll record and post my full performance video tomorrow, Tuesday. This has been a fun and challenging challenge!
