Healthy Singer Challenge: Substances

Welcome to the Healthy Singer Challenge! This week, we’re exploring the impact of mood-altering substances on vocal health and overall performance.

Using insights from the "Alcohol and the Brain" (2024) report, we learn that alcohol consumption can affect cognitive and motor functions critical to voice control. Even moderate drinking can have long-term effects on the neural pathways responsible for vocal production. For singers, this could mean diminished breath support, vocal fatigue, and a lack of precision in tone and pitch. Moderation is key to maintaining vocal stamina and clarity.

Additionally, the NATS article on Marijuana and the Voice highlights the potential risks associated with mood-altering substances like marijuana. While some might use these substances to relax or reduce anxiety, they can cause inflammation in the vocal folds, decreased lung capacity, and long-term damage to your instrument. As singers, our voice is our most precious asset, and protecting it means making choices that support vocal health.

For this challenge, we encourage you to:

  • Reflect on your habits and consider any changes that could support your vocal health.
  • Practice singing with optimal hydration—replace alcohol or other substances with water or herbal tea for a week and notice the difference in your vocal performance.
  • Share your experience in the community. How does mindful moderation or abstinence impact your voice, mood, and overall singing experience?

For a deeper dive into this topic, take a look at the attached articles.

Let’s prioritize vocal health together, one mindful choice at a time!
