    Hi Heidi,

I've been taking opera singing lessons as a tenor for a year and a half and recently got admitted into a conservatory. However, I'm also passionate about strength training. I used to go to the gym nearly everyday but I found out it created a lot of tension around my neck and jaw, and it hinders my support as well due to loss of ab  flexibility even after stretching. I've been really struggling to find my vibrato, and even though I've worked a lot on good posture, good support, etc., muscle tension always comes in the way. I made the experiment of taking two days off the gym prior to my conservatory audition and there I've been able to sing with vibrato. Then I took a couple of weeks off the gym and continued to make progress in this regard. Last thing I've tried is incorporating a neck and jaw stretching routine by kinesiologist after the gym, but the tension made its way into my singing practice once again.

My question is: is strength training (i.e, weight lifting and the like) necessarily incompatible with singing? After doing some online research, that seems to be the case. But I've also seen a couple of singers (coincidentally baritones) who are rather muscular, and I wonder if there is way of making these two passions of mine coexist. Training has a very positive effect on my health and emotional well being, so I would like to find a way around this issue. Any thoughts or experience on the matter?

Heidi, I second that.  I do weight training , cardio  and flexibility nearly every day and have done that for 30 plus years. I find it really beneficial for singing.

did you ever notice an impact on your voice? Or were you not singing and training your voice then? Super curious about this topic!

Not really.  Was singing in glee club in college and did not notice anything.

thank you for taking the time to give such a comprehensive response! I will definitely try to reach a balance. This week I reduced the frequency and volume in my weight training and took my first yoga class. I will also add swimming in the days I don't lift weights. So will see how it goes!

At the moment I'm trying to get a more consistent and less forceful breath flow- I have a bad habit of pushing too much air through my voice. My problem is that when I attempt to use less breath, the tone is much better but I struggle to support as well. Any advice would be appreciated.

oh, I'm working on that too! I sang the Gounod Ave Maria with too much air, in last December 2024 recital here on Tonebase. That's because I misunderstood the piece and I sang it as of it was a sacred / choral piece. Thanks to the Ave Maria course by I understood that the Ave Maria is almost an Art Song. I'm working on my breath to obtain a good support also with piano and pianissimo dynamics!

      Looking forward to the answer!

      Ciao!

My quick answer for this is to work on the source function. The most effective way to manage breath is to take only what you need (silent inhalation helps), put it in the right place (lower abs as a primary holding tank) and manage what you took well (engage those muscles to control the exhale). If you are overloading that system, you are overwhelming that process and throwing things out of balance. See if you can figure out where in that process things are getting de-railed. We did a TWI on breath management that you can go back and review. LOTS of tips. You can find that here. Hope this helps!

Just seeing this.. This is perfect for your voice -  the use of vibrato and the phrasing are really lovely! AND you truly have a gift for storytelling and character :) - this is just an excellent vehicle for you, all around. Brava!
