Week 2: The Complete Singer

Day 8: Artistry in Practice

Not everything needs to be forte. Share a moment of vocal restraint and intimacy.

Day 11: Duet Day

Sing with another tonebase member, a friend, or duet with a past recording of yourself.

Day 12: Staging in Small Spaces

Use gesture or movement to enhance your delivery—even if you're in your living room.

Wrap it up with a performance you're proud of and share what you’ve discovered over 14 days.

    Day 8: https://youtu.be/EUVu7oYj1mM

My teacher encourages me to "play" with my singing, and not have a super structured Practice Time (unless that's helpful for me). As a result, I tend to sing and practice all throughout the day while washing dishes, waiting for students to arrive for classes, watching water boil. When I do practice/rehearse in a structured manner at the piano, I do a fair bit of record - listen - record - listen, wash, rinse, repeat.

Now I see that although my video was only a minute long, it was too big to upload. I will try again with just sound.

started doing that again recently, but I have different sitting ideas to not get stiff, tense or bored.

Day 9 - I chose an excerpt of the Welsh hymn Calon Lan.  The Welsh hymns are beautiful  but the language is very difficult to get a handle on.

Thanks for sharing this. Traditional hymns/folk songs are among my favorites to hear, no matter the land from which they come.

Day 9, I thought I would not have anything to post as I didn't know what to sing, but  mentioned the Brahms folksongs - so I looked them up, found one I can probably handle (Heidenroslein), and will post tomorrow. Until then!

What a fun discovery for you! Always fun to see how singers can discover new music from each other .. and the tonebase community is a wealth of language and culture!

And with my sincerest apologies to those who speak German as their mother tongue, here is my Day 9 submission:
    https://youtube.com/shorts/ar4JLr0hAPc?feature=share

This is a German folk song, Heidenroslein,  set to piano by J. Brahms. If you know it, you will notice that I transposed the last few measures as my teacher does not want me to sing at the top of my range right now while it’s still so new to me. This was fun. I learned that I tend to be quite hesitant to sing in a language I don’t know well, and had to take a deep breath and just go for it. Thanks to  for mentioning these folk songs to me, and  I do admit that watching myself in this clip I can’t really imagine myself as Lady Macbeth either!

excellent! So great to see you moving out of your comfort zone on this one. The Brahms is so charming.. I don't hear that one nearly as often as the Schubert

beautifully clear and pure! I know and love several of the Brahms folk songs (my mom says that when I was little, “Die BlĂŒmelein, sie schlafen” was the only lullaby I liked to hear her sing - all others made me cry
😁), but I have never heard this one. As Heidi said, usually one only ever hears Schubert’s setting of it.

Thanks, Alex. When I was in college, nearly 40 years ago, my next-door neighbors were "visiting" Germans (corporate exchange-type program). Their young children didn't speak English, and I was called upon to care for them on occasion. I knew just enough German to be able to communicate with them! Of course, I've forgotten most of it now, but I do wish I'd known some of these charming and lovely songs then!
